Love, The MiniSkirt Files
It took me until the age of 26 to truly love my delicate looking body. I was always naturally thin and though I finally love this feature about myself, I do definitely enhance some of my slight curves for an extra oomph or just for a balance in my overall look.
We can create an hourglass figure when skinny by strategically wearing clothing to let the eye believe there is more weight on the body in certain areas than there actually is. To consider are the shape, color, cut and fabric of clothing we wear along with accessories.
We are adding the look of weight here and more curves to the body or emphasizing the slight curve we may already have.
It is quite alright to want to want to “improve” ourselves but do be proud of your delicate frame. In my written piece Look & Be More Delicate: Body Language, Looks & Behaviors, I write for ladies who would like some tips on appearing more delicate, feminine or soft. I also mention why men love a delicate lady. Keep in mind you can be considered delicate in different forms thus I do believe our mental strength should always remain strong and never be malleable or delicate.
And as I always say…
” It is important to have an image of the woman you

want to become. It is equally imperative that you love yourself as you are in this moment prior to beginning your self-improvement.”
What Makes an Hourglass Figure?
An hourglass shape and figure is determined by the structure of our bones and fat disposition to the upper and lower curves of the body. An hourglass figure typically has:
- Bust and hips in equal size
- Smaller waist in proportion to bust and hips
- A rounded bottom
The hourglass shape has always been associated with voluptuous women. Large breasts, larger bottoms, concave waists. Not to mention we are used to seeing a thick full head of hair and full lips to top off this bombshell physique.
I have learned however gathering all my information from men that have complimented me, us “skinny girls” can be considered an hourglass shape as well. It all lies on the proportions of the body. I have a thin, delicate frame, small breasts, my hair is quite thin and my lips are small and NOT pouty & full. However, contrary to the typical voluptuous beauty standards, I have been told I have an hourglass figure.
How To Get An Hourglass Shape If You’re Skinny
An hourglass figure consists of three main parts of the body. Upper curve. Smaller Middle section. And bottom curve.
The breast area would be our upper half, a smaller looking waist in the middle and our hips and bums create the lower half of the hourglass. Read further for my tips on enhancing our upper and lower curves. As for our waist, we always know a cinched belt can emphasize or create a smaller look in proportion to the upper and lower halves we are focusing on.
With use of Color, Clothing, Fabric, Design and Other Techniques to create an hourglass shape we must:
- Strategically Enhance Our Breast Area
- Highlight Our Small Waist
- Strategically Enhance Our Hips & Bottoms
In this article I will give you many tips to do so, however…
WITHOUT THE USE OF THE FOLLOWING;
NO Waist Training, NO Hardcore Workouts, NO Diets, NO Surgery.
Those routes are options for some but I’m focusing on a more simple approach to the hourglass figure.
These are more simplified tips that have created the effect for me without the other listed things.
Take a look at your figure and determine what part, Top Middle or Bottom [Bust, Waist or Bum], you’d like to minimize or increase to create the proportions and appearance of an hourglass figure.
Make Breasts Appear Larger: Top Portion of Hourglass
To make our breasts appear bigger and curvier we should start with a good bra that gives us a natural look but with a slight emphasis to enhance. We are trying to enhance the curve here in relation to our waists and hips.
Padding that provides a natural effect vs. the hard push up padding is a good place to start. I love a padded push up with that soft “mold to your body” material provides that natural curvier look to our breasts.
START WITH A GOOD FOUNDATION:
THE BRA
My favorite bra to give a natural emphasis to the breasts is the Victoria’s Secret Push-Up Bra selection from the Dream Angels Collection.
SPECIAL TIP:
I sometimes use a bra clasp in the back of my bra. This pulls my small bust together some, creating a slightly larger top half. Shown below are the ones I use!
CLOTHING THAT EMPHASIZES OUR BUST:
- Jackets or Coats that are Double Breasted
- High Neck Tops
- Crew Neck Tops
- Scoop Neck Tops can also give a rounder shape
- Sweetheart Necklines
DETAILS THAT ENHANCE OUR BUST:
- Tie Front Top
- Bustier Design
- Ruffle Details near bust area
- Crochet-Like Design near bust area
- Ruching or Draping
- Material With a Sheen to it
- A Scarf or Faux Fur gives a larger look to this area especially when trying to look more shapely in a coat.
- One of my favorite little tricks is to leave your top unzipped a bit. This creates the illusion of a rounder upper hourglass figure as the fabric somewhat curves when unzipped.
- Color Contrasts. Brighter & Lighter colors in the bust area.
In my article: How To Look Curvy When Skinny: Curve Enhancing Techniques, I give more tips for my ladies including:
- How To Make Thin Legs Look Bigger
- How To Look Thicker In A Dress

Both of these articles I wrote compliment one another quite well and the recommended one abouve further discusses this topic on how to get an hourglass figure when skinny.
How To Emphasize The Small Waist Look: Middle Hourglass
We know that a belt or tie in the wait area cinches in the are creating the hourglass effect.
Look for dresses that have this feature and other features that create an emphasis on the bust and hips.
My favorite dress that creates this is my green safari dress, shown here, that zips down. To create a larger looking bust, I leave the the top of the dress slightly unzipped.
The dress ties in the middle, highlighting a defined waist, creating a fantastic hourglass shape as well as adding in a touch of femininity.
The pockets on the hips further create the hourglass shape by enhancing the bottom portion.
- Be cognizant of what colors and designs are on your articles of clothing. Pay attention to where these colors and designs are placed.
- Brighter color placement near the bust and hips will emphasize those areas and a darker color in the waist area will subdue the waist. This keeps eyes on the curvier parts, enhances a small waist or can define a waist further creating that hourglass effect.
- If you’re wearing a looser outfit, let’s say a T-shirt & Jeans for example, and want to create a slight hourglass effect with a defined waist; Tuck one side of your top into your jeans. Simple but has quite an effect in what we are trying to achieve here.
This simple tactic breaks apart that loose look and creates a point where the eye separates the body into the upper, middle, and lower portion.
The dress above was purchased over 5 years ago. You can find similar ones by searching “safari dress.”

MY PERSONAL FAVORITE: A Ribbed Dress With High Neck
- High Neck: Look of Fuller Breasts
- Ribbed Material: Adds “Thickness” to The Body
- Bright Color: Emphasizes the Look of Curves (Reflects Light)
- Special Tip: Wearing a Slip Skirt Underneath Creates Bigger Hips!
How To Make Hips Look Bigger: Bottom Portion Of Hourglass
Thighs and are generally the thicker part of legs and help create the bottom half of the hourglass figure along with the hips & bum.
To make hips look bigger, we need to be strategic with what fabric of clothing we select along with the design and colors used to make our hips appear curvier.
- Be selective of low rise or high rise jeans
I’ve notice low rise jeans really amp up the hips and bum if you’re thin. However, high waisted full skirts work brilliantly in creating hips depending on the material of course.
- Ribbed & Thicker Material
Ribbed dresses or skirts, a thicker material sweater skirt. Sweater leggings provide some width to the entire lower portion of the hourglass.
The skirt shown above is my favorite out of my closet. It has a nice thick sweater-like material that truly enhances my slight curves along with it’s design. - An A-line Skirt With A Fold Over, Wrap Skirts, Skirts with Ruching
All of these add the look of weight and curves to the hip and bum area. The pattern of the skirt is important as well. - Details Like Ruffles & Draping
I briefly mentioned these in the section before. Details like this enhance what ever part of the body they are placed on. To achieve a look of wider hips, select a skirt or dress with ruffles under the bum. - Select Enhancing Patterns
Chevron, Horizontal stripes, Checkered Pattern, Medium Sized Polka Dots, Grid-Like Pattern - Look through my tips in How To 7+ Tips For The Hourglass Effect: How To Get Bigger Hips In A Day.
In my written piece 9 Skirts For A Thin Woman: Creating Feminine Curves, I give examples of skirts from my very own closet that give me a more feminine figure, specifically in the hips. The picture above is me in my grid print mini skirt. My most favorite skirt I must add.
How Can A Skinny Person Get A Big Butt
Our bottoms are a result of our body frame, fat disposition and muscle mass.
A skinny woman can get a bigger looking butt with the use of clothing, fabric, color and some strategic but gentle yoga.
Along with some of the listed tips above in this article, you can enhance the look of your backside with some of these tips as well.
- Pockets on your pants have the ability to make your derrière look larger or smaller depending on pocket size and placement.
- Smaller pockets placed more center / slightly inward on the back of the pants seem to create the look of a larger backside.
- Pants with a light stretch and in a light color can enhance any slight curvature of your backside that is already there. I truly love a jegging style pant for this. They are tight, but have a stretch that contours to the body nicely.
They also have seams that run down the side of the leg, similar to jeans, that actually widen the hip area. From behind, your bum will look a bit more shapely with this detail. - Peplum tops, I noticed, highlight the area just below where the fabric ends. Knowing this, select tops where the peplum hits just above your rear end. That way it will highlight and enhance that curve there.
I have mentioned before in previous articles that The Mountain Pose in yoga gives great shape to legs when done properly. This pose is a simple standing pose, but the placement of your feet creates a slight workout in the legs and bum. I have noticed my backside grow some after doing this pose. Please always consult with a professional prior to beginning anything new and always begin slow.
A LITTLE NOTE TO YOU: Thank you for taking the time to read through and I hope you found something useful. Always love the figure you are in. Treat it beautifully. And its quite alright to dress her up nicely to feel more confident 😉
