How To Look Curvy When Skinny.
You’ll find my [favorite formula] for achieving an hourglass look further in the article!
I struggled with this one quite a bit but I have learned to love my shape indeed. It is quite alright to want to enhance our looks sometimes, and for me, these tips I gathered have been applied throughout my adolescence, into my twenties, and now my thirties.
To look curvy when skinny we need to apply some general basics. Proper use of clothing while keeping its color and design in mind to highlight certain parts of the body and emphasize the area will create a curvature.
Keep in mind these are all suggestions. There is nothing wrong with a little improvement and wanting to feel more secure, but DO appreciate your body and realize it is beautiful. I don’t care how cliché that sounded. It took me years to finally feel confident in mine. It would have been superb though if I had felt this feeling growing up.

Clothing And Details That Make A Skinny Girl Look Bigger
Structure in clothing really provides more of a structured in our frame or body making it look more shapely. Not to mention, structured clothing has a tendency to look more expensive even if its not.

- Structured Clothing: Gives Shape
- Double Breasted Jackets: Widens The Body Some
- Cargo Jackets With Pockets: Add Look of Weight depending on pocket placement
- Chunky Knit Sweaters: Add Look of Weight
- Asymmetrical Zipper: Widens The Body Some
- Thick Scarves | Faux Fur Scarves: Add Curves

What Not To Wear For A Thin Woman:
There are a few thing that I’ve noticed completely work the opposite and give a slimming effect. Nothing is forbidden, for there are always some alterations and adjustments that can make any outfit suitable for anyone. These are just some articles of clothing to be cautious about.
- WRAP DRESSES are often praised for thin women. I find however they work completely opposite with my small frame and small bust. They give me an appearance of wearing an oversized robe.
- BATWING TOPS can be added to the NO List. At least for me. They gave me a VERY slim look especially in the arms and décolletage area. They are not as slimming if the material is a sweater with somewhat of a thickness to it.
- VERTICAL LINES elongate and could thin a woman out more. Horizontal lines usually widen the are that they are placed on. If you want to emphasize and widen the bust area for example, find a sweater or top with a design that has lines in the horizontal direction, and on the bust area.
What To Wear If You Are Tall & Thin
If you are tall & thin, simply fall in love with it! But I completely understand that sometimes we do want to change or “de-hance” and not enhance some of our features and attributes.
When selecting clothing to wear if you are tall & thin, it is important to think of proportions. To compliment and create a better balance in your height and weight; Use color, fabric cut and weight, design patterns and color combinations to look and feel more proportionate as a tall and thin woman.
If you are thin and tall, but with somewhat of an hourglass shape. A crop top with skirt can look wonderful. Select a full or circle skirt if you want to enhance the hips. The crop top breaks apart your height some, as the skin almost creates a color break up in the form of a horizontal stripe.
Add tulle underneath the circle skirt for more fullness. Take inspiration from the dresses in the 1950’s.
TO HIGHLIGHT YOUR PRETTY HEIGHT: We know monochromatic color schemes in clothing will elongate us. If you want to highlight this feature of your this is a simple and sophisticated. way to do so.
TO BREAK UP YOUR HEIGHT: Create A Color Contrast. This will visually divide the body into different proportions. Color blocking styles of clothing are fantastic at doing this. If you don’t have clothes with color block designs, just create the look yourself by wearing a bright top and a muted bottom, that’s just one example.
LEGS: If your legs are long, and you want to work on your proportions in this area, ankle cut jeans are super flattering and break apart the height. Try on several styles to see what gives you a more proportionate look. Keep in mind the rise of your jeans. There are many to choose from, high waisted, low rise, mid rise, etc. NOTE: High waisted jeans did not look good on me personally, lower rise look better. However high waisted skirts look fantastic on me.
How To Look Thicker In A Dress
When I was younger, I always wanted to appear curvier in a dress. I used some strategic tips to give me the illusion along with my other tips listed throughout this article.
Use of color, fabric cut, weight and thickness along with patterns and design can make you look thicker in a dress and give a curvier appearance.
The Good Basics: Undergarments
Let’s start with the top half of our body. We want to have a good bra that makes our breasts look natural but slightly emphasized. I love a padded push up with that soft “mold to your body” material. This keeps it natural but gives that extra oomph to this area giving us a “thicker” look.
Special Tip! A bra converter clip placed in the back of the bra, holding the straps together provides a bit of oomph the the breasts! Particularly smaller chests! See images further down.
Special Tip! After some trial & error trying to look curvier and thicker in a dress, I tried a slip under my dresses, specifically the tighter ones. A slip under a ribbed dress enhances the hips so beautifully! It’s just that extra tiny addition of weight / curve.
Just be aware of slips that you purchase. Some are actually slimming. So if we’re trying to look more curvy, we just want a fitted one with a bit of stretch.
Material & Details
MY MOST FAVORITE TIP: A Ribbed Dress
This dress contours to body but is also forgiving of imperfection. Ribbed material adds the look of weight and our delicate bones aren’t as visible through the fabric. I have quite a selection of these dresses for this reason!
If you are wearing a dark dress: You can select a fabric that reflect light despite the dark color. The shine will add reflection creating a bigger look underneath. Examples are Sequin Dress, Faux Leather Dress, Shimmery Material.
Dresses with pockets such as a safari dress can add some thickness to the body especially when placed near the hips.
Similar to what we addressed earlier in this article, Designs and Patterns can create and widen our look a bit.
Patterns & Designs To Consider: Zig Zag, Horizontal Stripes, Checkered, Medium Sized Polka Dots, Grid-Like
Avoid The Following
I know many people suggest this for tall thin women, but I tend to avoid wrap dresses. They make me look as if I’m wearing a robe and look oversized on my delicate frame. Wrap dresses seem to compliment bustier women or curvier women from what I’ve seen. When we try to create curves, it is possible to be swimming in this style.
In my piece, Dresses For Skinny Girls: Dresses That Make You Look Curvy, there are some examples of details to look for in a dress to look thicker.
There are several ways to look thicker in skirts as well. You will find my favorite skirts from my own closet in the article, “9 Skirts For A Thin Woman: Creating Feminine Curves.”
Colors That Make You Look Curvy
Use of color is a brilliant way to make you seem as though you have a curvier body.
Generally speaking darker colors create a smaller look or more slender look, and lighter colors reflect light creating a larger appearance thus a curvier looking body. Whites, Nudes, Pearlescent or shinier colors along with vivid bright colors can make you look curvy.
This doesn’t mean however that we cannot wear darker colors when trying to look curvier [or light colors if someone is trying to conceal their figure].
If the fit and shaping is complimentary to our bodies and has other details that add a look of weight, then any color can be worked with when trying to look curvier.
HIGH SATURATION COLORS
VIVID BRIGHT COLORS | NEONS
These brighter colors stand out. They in no way settle back into the crowd and blend in. They definitely reflect light and our eyes do draw to these colors. If you are comfortable with standing out, NEON COLORS also reflect a lot of light.
I like the way that they have the ability to highlight a figure and actually enhance or give a look of more curves not to mention the ability to brighten the complexion when selecting the right shade.
Eyes naturally gravitate toward vivid colors therefore highlighting the shape beneath them and creating a larger look and curvier appearance subconsciously.
Linked below is a similar dress I found online. I actually prefer the higher neck ribbed dresses as they give me oomph up top. My breasts look much fuller with a higher neck.
Combine it with the ribbed dress and the slip skirt underneath : YOU GET MY FORMULA FOR AN HOURGLASS FIGURE!
