How To Make Short Nails Look Feminine: Prettier & Polished

How To Make Short Nails Look Feminine

This is a little article on how to make short nails look good, how to make short nails look feminine and how to make short nails look pretty. This will also help how to make short bitten nails look good.

I was looking through a magazine and was distracted by a perfume ad, I always admire the photography and thought behind make-up & perfume ads.

The perfume had a beautiful woman who had the perfect combination of sweet and seductive in her look. I had never seen short nails look so feminine in the pretty milky pink color they were polished with.

I actually thought this look was prettier than my own long nails and filed all of them down to recreate this sweet feminine look!

To make short nails look feminine, browse through this little guide & I hope you can recreate the same effect and feel just as lovely as I did in doing so.

Let’s begin with the first tip, a complete basic.

Have Clean Nails & An Evenly Filed Design

Make sure your nails are well groomed. Have them evenly filed in a shape most flattering with your fingers.

Nails with shorter nail beds look pretty with a slightly rounded filed edge as this can elongate the look of the nail.

If you have long nail beds and fingers, a slightly square shape can suit your look perfectly. It is best to try and envision it before you start filing.

If you choose not to wear nail polish, a nail buffer has the ability to really give your nails a naturally manicured look. By buffing out the ridges and smoothening the entire nail, an instantly polished look is achieved. Without actual polish of course.

Even prior to putting polish on the nails, I do like to give them a little buff as the nail polish will apply more evenly.

Select Naturals, Neutrals & Light Colors

Light colors such as natural looking pinks, pastels, nudes, creamy off-whites, milky colors, mauves, and blushes all give a soft feminine look to nails. Taupes or tans for darker skin tones look exceptionally beautiful.

Lighter colors have a tendency to look more feminine and soft. Nudes that compliment our skin tone can elongate the fingers creating more feminine looking nails and hands in general.

A little bit of shimmer in the polish is acceptable while still keeping a classy appearance. Glittery polishes however have the ability to look too glam.

My favorite soft colored polishes are from Essie. They have a beautiful selection of pinks and milky colors that give me a reminiscent look of the woman in the ad, where I first learned to appreciate the modest femininity in short nails.

STORY TIME & TIP: I almost always do my own nails. I’ve had them done professionally three times and a nail technician had told me to use a nail strengthener in between manicures as they weaken our delicate nails.

These are the two products she had recommended, and of course I tried them out to bring some life to my nails.

The nail technician recommended this for strengthening nails.
This one for strengthening but also a dash of pretty & natural color.

Use A Painting Technique That Makes Nails Look Longer

I’ve always used the same technique when painting my nails. It might be against the “rules” but rules never worked properly in enhancing my natural beauty or making me look my best. I slightly bend them when doing makeup and nails.

I noticed when “properly painting my nails, they always looked too wide on my thin fingers. By applying nails polish on the entire nail, but leaving a bit of the sides exposed, I create a much more flattering look.

My nails look prettier, longer and my fingers look more complimentary to my actual nail. Overall my hands look prettier when I use this technique.

This technique actually let me wear darker colors while still maintaining a classy look.

Add A Ring For Some Feminine Shine

Add a ring on your finger to bring in some feminine touches. Just a simple ring that shines in the light simply adds a little extra femininity to the look of short nails.

Keep simplicity in mind. Dainty pieces create a more feminine look. A tiny sparkle on a ring adds a perfect touch of femininity. A ring on the ring finger is one of the most dainty places you can put a ring.

Add A Gem To Nails

Adding a tiny little gemstone on the nails is another little sparkling addition to short nails. One on the nail of your ring finger looks delicate and pretty. Select a gem stone thats very tiny of course.

A larger one would overpower your short nails. A little stone on lightly painted nails looks so feminine. I prefer.a milky pink nail polish to complete this look.

Be Aware Of Biting Nails & Try To Avoid

Avoid biting the nails and skin around your nails. Be aware of your habits and mannerisms. Not only does it look un-ladylike, it leaves your nails looking very unhealthy, not presentable, and uncared for.

Dry skin and rough bitten up skin around the nails takes away from the feminine look. Sometimes we are unaware that little things like this can make us look a bit unkempt.

Push Back Your Cuticles

It’s a simple little step but can visually create the look of length in the nails.

Pushing back the cuticles makes nail beds seem a little longer. When you paint your nails, it will add a touch of length if the cuticles have been pushed back.

I would avoid cutting them as there are risks in doing so. I always gently push them back after a shower when the skin has softened.

Use A Nail Whitener

A simple nail polish with a whitening effect make nails look instantly prettier. It also gives a natural effect as it is sheer but at the same time offers some shine to glam them up a bit.

Some of these polishes can help the nails become stronger and grow if you are looking to grow them.

Select A Nail Polish With Shine: Be Aware Of Matte Effect

Matte nails are beautiful of course.

A nail polish with high shine however adds another element of femininity to short nails. The shiny polish reflects light and every time you move you are creating a bit of dazzle to the eye.

This effect is heightened if you wear a little ring on your finger or a small gem on your nail that too will reflect some light.

Have Softened Glowing Skin

A good hand cream is essential in keeping your hands looking supple. This is an important characteristic as it creates a more overall feminine appearance of the hands and nails.

Aquaphor or Vaseline are both healing ointments that help heal the skin around nails after biting. These are an essential for me as they also keep my cuticles soft.

My personal favorite for healing and keeping the skin around the nails soft
