What is lipstick used for? There is an extensive and beautiful history to lipstick and what it’s original makings consisted of. This lovely piece of art had it’s uses, advantages and disadvantages throughout the decades all the way from it’s first documented use.
There is an eroticism behind wearing it and even in the application method itself-but that is a completely different article to write about.
I remember my first lipstick, the instantaneous wow factor it gave me as I looked at that little lady looking back at me in the mirror. That is just one reason why I continue to use it. Let’s take a further look into it’s use and why women love to wear it.
What is lipstick used for? Why do women love lipstick? What is the importance of lipstick to a woman?
There are two MAIN answers to this question that I have observed.
1. A woman will coat her lips in color to heighten her attractiveness & femininity.
2. She also may do this for herself, to feel empowered or perhaps it provides her with a spark of confidence.
In addition to these two main observations a woman may find that it;
Completes A Look. The Finishing Touch
Lipstick can be that final piece to an overall look. Some women finish and complete their look with perfume, heels, an accessory, or mascara.
For other women, it’s the lipstick that completes the look. She may have several shades and depending on her outfit or her disposition, she selects the best shade for completion.
Creates A Put Together Look
Similar to completing a look, lipstick can provide an overall put together look. When we use other cosmetics, it can wash out our natural features and then require an emphasis on them to create a more unified look.
Lipstick can do this. The color we select is quite important as it should compliment the skin tone or foundation. A lipstick can give several effects and create an entire different story to your look which we continue to discuss in the next sections.
Creates Drama & It Attracts Attention
There are times or events when we want to add a little drama to our appearance or create a more “look at me” look. Lipstick holds this power.
Color itself is very powerful and can create quite an effect. Red is of course a dramatic and bold color. The variety of shades and tones in the color red itself makes for a spectrum of drama to choose from.
Softens A Woman’s Look & Creates A More Feminine Look
A woman’s lips are often quite softer looking than a man’s and usually, but not always, have a more pillowy look to them.
The use of lipstick can create this effect and heighten the difference between masculinity and femininity even if a woman does not possess such “typical” feminine features.

May Create A More Youthful or Mature Appearance. You Decide
The color you select in comparison to your skin tone and overall look will help to create a more youthful look or a more mature look-which ever you are attempting to creat.
The colors in the chart above under the section “Colors That Will Soften Features” tend to create a more youthful look but not always. Testing out colors is always the best way to find your most perfect shade.

Increases Confidence Overall
In Purse Essentials: What Does A Lady Have In Her Bag, I mention to carry an item that creates an instant aura of confidence. For some women it may be a perfume that invokes this feeling, for another woman it’s a mascara. For me, lipstick is my number one essential to ignite that confidence.
A friend of mine worked for an optometrist and was assisting a woman in choosing a pair of new glasses. As they sat down to try on a few selected pairs, the woman paused and went into her bag. She took a lipstick out and applied it to her lips, “Okay, now I’m ready” she said.
Though she had the smallest lips, she felt fantastic after one swipe of her favorite lipstick and found it a necessity prior to choosing the right pair of glasses.
I found this rather funny in an ironic way as that is exactly something I myself would do. Lipstick just brightens my entire look and makes me feel confident.
The way it completes my look, makes me feel put together, creates the drama or softness I decide, and gives me a more feminine look is simply enough to make me feel confident in an instantaneous manner.
Why Is Lipstick Attractive?
I’ve heard this several times when speaking to men about a woman they admired, “It’s something about her, it’s got to be her lips.”
What did lips indicate? Age? Femininity? Sensuality? To me they indicate all three and quite possibly more.
We speak from our lips, they house important words and conversations we have. When they are closed they exhibit a sense of mystery. They are a very important feature to the female face and personally find them fascinating to highlight with some color.
It heightens a very mysterious part of the face
I personally think the lips and the eyes are the most seductive and mysterious features on the face. When we put on a lipstick, it places an emphasis on this mysterious and seductive part of the face along with highlighting the smile.

The color we use can draw attention and create a more feminine look
Pinks and mauves seem to give the most flirtatious and feminine look. Nudes and tans will create that softer appearance and give a more blended look. This tip is one key factor I mention in Best Lipsticks For Thin Lips.
It can also create a seductive look using the color red
Red used in clothing, nail color, accessories and of course lipstick, has quite the effect on people and is often used in seduction. There are endless studies that indicate the effects of this sexy color, but we know from experience it’s quite the little pot-stirrer.

It accentuates the shape of the lips
Along with liner, we can accentuate and enhance our lovely lip shape making them look just a touch “extra.”
